A parliamentary election was held in Laos on 30 April 2011.[1] There were an additional 17 members of parliament (with 132 seats in total) in comparison to the last election, to reflect population growth.[2]

190 candidates were selected to stand in the election by the National Election Committee, with 47 of them women; of the newly elected members of parliament, 99 were men and 33 women. Only five independents were allowed to stand besides the Lao People's Revolutionary Party candidates. One independent, Sisaliao Swengsuksa (the president of the Lao Farmer Products company), was elected in Vientiane.

As voting is mandatory, turnout was strong, with 3.23 million people voting out of 3.24 million eligible voters.[3]
